A Mosaic of Three Families

After purchasing a box of super-8 home movies (filmed in the 70’s) from an estate sale, I got curious about the family whose memories I had in my possession. Was it a mistake that lead to a stranger walking away with so many family memories? Were they already digitized? Is there anyone out there who wants them back?

I don’t have answers to those questions yet. But what I do have are a collection of 8mm home movies from the 50s that came from an antique shop and a collection of my own family home moves shot on VHS in the 90s.

After digitizing them all, I began looking for all the ways our lives overlapped. What followed is one of the most sentimental pieces I’ve ever made. Not just because of the inherent nostalgia that old media possesses, but also because it features my dad who is no longer with us.

Turns out, three families separated by a total of 4 decades still have a lot in common.
